Slds.

    Once again, I am *NOT* Mr. Atari. I didn't see this clip on UA-cam so I posted it for everyone to see. But ya, It's really amazing what the older technology could do. Too bad we couldn't max out the potential of the Atari series. If we had a few gigs of space back then that didn't cost millions of dollars, it would've been incredible. Me, I had an Atari 800XL back in 1985 with an Atari 1010 and a 1050. I kinda wore it out unfortunately in my younger years (I was 8). It lived to be 10yo.

    Actually, Mr. Atari created a Hard Drive adapter for the XL/XE series. He probably placed the file on the drive and ran it. Just a guess.

    Its hilarious. Seeing this makes me realize how much potential new and old generation computers and consoles have which will remain unused forever... WHAT A FUCKIN' WASTE -.-

      Hi, Adrian. I'm from the future. Each one of us carries a device in our pockets that is more powerful than all computers in the world of 1983 combined, supercomputers included. What do we use them for? Designing warp drives? Curing diseases? AI? I'm here to tell you that you're not ready for the truth.

    "If what makes the machines good is merely the computer's potential, sure, the Atari 800 wins out." bullshit. c64's chipset suits much more to the typical 80's videogame than a800. you have lot and big sprites (vs few and shitty 8 pixel wide stripes on a800), more than 4 color on a highres screen without extra tricks, SID sound. no more needed to be told.

    Yes, that is example ... OF WHAT I AM ARGUING. that business realities are more important than the specs.

  • @TangomanX2008
    @TangomanX2008 15 років тому

    Not sure what exactly you mean by the chronology, so we can set that aside unless you would be more specific here. At any rate, the lesson I got out of the whole atari commodore thing is that business realities are more important in the quality of a computer experience than the specs of the technology itsef. I saw that again in the 8 bit Japanese systems (nintendo vs Sega), Atari St vs Amiga, the 386/VGA/Pcs vs the Amiga, the playstation vs the xbox, Microsoft vs Everybody else, etc.

    I am not sure where you get your information from regarding the video game crash of 1983/1984. The Atari company was cutting edge, but Bushnell, the founder sold it to investors who didn't understand the video game industry. As to whether or not Commodore had cut throat strategy, I don't doubt that and I believe that it may have played a role in the demise of the amiga later on, but the video game crash was mainly a video game console problem, but as a result the Atari brand got hit very bad.

  • @TangomanX2008
    @TangomanX2008 15 років тому

    The video game crash had to do with a lot of lame video games made for the video game consoles (the most prominent being the Atari 2600,but there were others, such as colecovision I believe).Pretty soon no one wanted to buy video games for those consoles and so the market crash It had nothing to do with a Atari XL/Commodore 64 trade in.But the crash really hurt the Atari brand bad because it made its name with the Atari 2600.The Commodore 64 had quality games for years after the videogame crash.

    It has to do with the fact on what makes the machines good. If what makes the machines good is merely the computer's potential, sure, the Atari 800 wins out. But for whatever reasons, most of if not all of the good software stuff (and software is technology too, btw) was coming out for the c64 and was not coming out on the Atari. (eg. Test Drive, Skate or Die, GEOS). As far as the video game crash, how as that caused by commodore, which didn't even produce a game console like the atari 2600?

    • @mjp29
      @mjp29 Рік тому

      Having the most software doesn't prove the c64 is better. If that were true, then Windows would be better than Mac or Linux!

  • @TangomanX2008
    @TangomanX2008 15 років тому

    I would agree that the atari was technically superior than the 64 in most respects (256 color graphics vs 16, and the basic was so much easier to do). However, Atari itself had alot of issues as a company (it took a big hit during the video game crash of 1984 for instance).

    • @mjp29
      @mjp29 Рік тому

      I had a C64 and Atari 800xl, the Atari was superior in my opinion. Especially the disk drive system!

    • @TangomanX2008
      @TangomanX2008 Рік тому

      @@mjp29 The C64 has a ridiculously slow disk drive. However 3rd parties solved that problem with cartridges that sped it up. I think there was one, I think it was called "The Final Cartridge" that sped it up by a factor of 20.

    • @mjp29
      @mjp29 Рік тому

      @@TangomanX2008 I had an Epyx fast load, and the Atari's drive would still smoke it. But I'm not just talking about speed, I found the 1541 drive to be significantly more buggy than the Atari. Also, you had to type some funky commands into the C64 to do disk operations like rename files. The Atari, and the Apple for that matter, were more polished than the C64. The C64 always felt like, to me, that things were thrown together at the last minute in the design process....

    thats true, they moved on to better things, but both the Atari 800xl and the c64 were the same generation of computer. My point is, is that the Commodore 8 bit computers saw its potential realized in a way that the Atari 8 bit computers didn't.

  • @AlphasysNl

    You're so right. But what would you expect from a system where even the manufactureres turned to newer things. If they were better is debatable. The Lynx was kinda okay, but even that didn't last long. Jaguar was a flop. The ST and TT were maybe the best sold line.

    While I do believe this is the real Mccoy, I don't think this could have been done using the technology available when those computers were normally used. It's kind of a shame that by the time we got to this level of compression, the systems that needed it most were outdated. Either way, awesome video

  • @TangomanX2008
    @TangomanX2008 16 років тому

    well, thats the thing, I had an Atari, I knew what it was capable off, and it was capable of much more than the commodore 64. The problem was that at some point all the good stuff was coming out on the commodore 64. When I realized games like Test Drive or Skate or Die weren't being made for the Atari, it was time to make a change. I don't think the Atari 800 series ever saw their full potential.
